About the Artist

Laurie Close (b. 1973) creates abstract paintings that investigate notions of depth and space as it pertains to the painted surface. Close has developed her visual language through an accumulation of experiences. Over time these experiences influenced her choices and became her signature style. Some of her most influential moments have come when she has stepped out of her comfort zone and tried a new medium or technique. The process of layering paint through various screens inspired her to approach painting on canvas in a different way. She switched from oil to acrylic and started layering the colors, creating larger bands of color using spreading tools. Changing the process allowed her to achieve a higher level of complexity.

Close holds a MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute, New York, where she received a Certificate of Excellence in Graduate Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited nationally and she has been the recipient of several awards, including First Place at the Piedmont Center of the Arts Juried Art Show and an artist residency (Partial Fellowship) at the Vermont Studio Center.

Close currently lives in a suburb outside San Francisco, California.
